“The Elements” Author Talks About the Future of the Book

“The Elements” is a multimedia periodic table of the elements, one of the most elegant and highly reviewed apps for the iPad. The quality of content, depth of information and ability to manipulate 3D objects are often cited as models for interactive learning on the iPad. Mac Slocum interviews the author, Theodore Gray, in this article from Tools of Change for Publishing, one of the O’Reilly Media websites. Gray comments on his creation, developing digital editions, the skills required, his optimism regarding the future of the printed book, and how he sees publishing changing in the coming years. The app is $13.99 in the App Store and the size of the app (1.7 GB) reflects the depth of the content. The Elements is based on a printed book of the same name and you can see previews of the contents.
